Azerbaijani Paralympic judo fighter claims gold in Grand Prix final - UPDATED

Azerbaijan's Paralympic judo fighter Namig Abbasli has stepped to the tatami in the Baku-hosted Grand Prix final.

Report informs that in the weight category of 66, the athlete encountered Uzbekistan's Utkirjon Niqmatov.

Abbasli won a gold medal by beating his rival.

IBSA Judo Grand Prix 2021, the international parajudo competition, has kicked off in Baku, Report informs.

Eighteen athletes represent Azerbaijan at the competitions held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex.

On the first day, six parajudo wrestlers entered the ring in ten weight categories.

Namig Abbasli (66kg) has reached the finals in the men’s event. Having gained victory first over Uchkun Karanbaev (Uzbekistan), and then Azamat Turumbetov (Kazakhstan) and Davyd Khorava (Ukraine), Abbasli will fight for the gold medal against Uzbek judoka Utkirjon Nigmatov.

In the women’s event, Azerbaijani judoka Sevda Veliyeva (57 kg) has reached the finals. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Lucia Araujo (Brazil), and in the semifinals - Zeynel Celik (Turkey). Uzbek judoka Parvina Samandarova will become Veliyeva’s rival in the decisive match.
