Azerbaijani leading freestyle wrestlers not to compete at Golden Grand Prix finals

Baku. 17 November.REPORT.AZ/ Today, members of the Azerbaijani freestyle wrestling national team, which trains for finals of the Golden Grand Prix international tournament dedicated to the memory of national leader Heydar Aliyev, come together in the Olympic Wrestling Center.

Report informs, open to the press training was held under the guidance of acting coach Firdovsi Umudov.

Dominating young wrestlers in the training drew attention. F.Umudov told reporters that many of them will compete at the Golden Grand Prix. He added that at each weight category 3 athletes will compete, also, in several weight categories, 4-5 athletes will fight: "According to the rules of the World Wrestling Association, at each weight category 3 wrestlers will compete. We have already made our choices. Information on general squad was sent to them yesterday. If depend on us, we'd like to be represented by 6-7 athletes."

This is the first severe test for Azerbaijani wrestlers after Rio 2016 Olympics. The acting coach said that the aim is to act better at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Leading freestyle wrestlers Sharif Sharifov, Toghrul Asgarov, Haji Aliyev and Jamaladdin Mahammadov will not compete at the Golden Grand Prix finals on November 24.

Notably, Golden Grand Prix finals will be held for the 9th time. Nearly 700 freestyle, Greco-Roman wrestlers from over 50 countries will participate in the tournament. Under the program, freestyle wrestlers will compete on the first day of the competition. Female Greco-Roman wrestlers will fight for win on November 25, male on 26.

The first matches will start at 10:00 every day, finals at 17:00. Official opening ceremony of the tournament will take place on November 24 at 16:00.

The competitions will be organized in the Baku Sport Palace.
