Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation VP elected president of new UWW Committee

The United World Wrestling (UWW) has established a single Committee for Grappling, Pankration, and Amateur MMA, according to Report.

Recognizing that many athletes simultaneously engage in multiple wrestling disciplines, the decision was made to manage these sports under a unified committee.

UWW's integration of these sports into a single committee stems from a desire to increase attention to them at a professional level. In light of this, a proposal has been made to national federations to support grappling, pankration, and amateur MMA.

Namig Aliyev, a member of the UWW Bureau and Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation (AWF), was elected as the president of the new committee, with Adrian Bakos to serve as vice-president. The committee will be fully formed after the selection of three more representatives nominated by national federations in accordance with UWW selection rules. This committee will be supported by the Athletes' Commission, the Coaches' Commission, and the Technical Commission.

Amateur MMA - Pankration will be supervised by UWW representative Onur Simsek, and grappling by Antonina Bosser.

Pankration,a form of hand-to-hand combat, was created in Greece and was historically part of the classical Olympic Games. Grappling and MMA are modern sports. The distinctive feature of grappling, a type of wrestling, is the use of choking techniques. In MMA, which is a mixed sport, both striking and wrestling techniques are used. Unlike professional MMA, amateur MMA matches in UWW are conducted on a wrestling mat rather than in a cage.
