Ombudswoman conducts fact-finding mission at destroyed cemeteries in Fuzuli, Zangilan

Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva has conducted a fact-finding mission to investigate cases of destruction of cemeteries by Armenia during the occupation.

As Report learnt from the Office of the Ombudsman, the main purpose of such visits is monitoring to identify the deliberate destruction of gravestones belonging to Azerbaijanis in the occupied Azerbaijani lands by Armenia for almost 30 years, as well as existing violations and bringing them to the attention of the international community.

Ombudswoman Sabina Aliyeva began her first assessment mission in liberated Fuzuli and in the cemeteries of a number of villages of Fuzuli District – Garaxanbayli, Dadali, and Kurdlar. During the fact-finding mission, the total destruction of all these cemeteries was revealed.

The Ombudswoman conducted another fact-finding mission in Zangilan District. The cemeteries of the destroyed villages of Mammadbayli and Agali of Zangilan District were monitored to collect evidence.

Within the framework of the fact-finding mission, it was also established that during the occupation period, Armenia, which violated the norms of international law and international humanitarian law, destroyed the graves in these cemeteries, and also mined these territories.

Based on the collected materials, a report will be drawn up to present to international organizations engaged in the human rights field.
