Astrakhan police department issues statement over death of reporter Ulviyya Shamilqizi

Baku. 24 January. REPORT.AZ/ The police department of Astrakhan region of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has released a statement on the death of Azerbaijani citizen, journalist Ulviyya Shamilgizi (Mammadova).

Report informs, the incident took place on January 23, at 18:20 local time (at 19.20 Baku time) on the 1378th km of the Tambov-Volgograd-Astrakhan highway in the province of Trusovsk. It was reported that a 30-year-old unidentified person in “Volkswagen Passat” hit a woman born in 1986, a citizen of Azerbaijan, who returned home from training (official name was not announced). According to information, the incident took place in not regulated pedestrian crossing.

There is no pedestrian crossing rule violation at that part of the highway. Because there was no illuminated pedestrian crossing and traffic light it is called unregulated pedestrian crossing.

Ulviyya Shamilgizi, who worked for Azerbaijani media for a long time, acted at a number of media outlets, including newspaper “Xalq Cəbhəsi” (Popular Front), and Report News Agency. During period of activity, she was repeatedly winner and prizer of competitions among journalists. U.Shamilgizi had lived in Astrakhan, Russia since last year to continue her education.

The journalist's father, Shamil Mammadov has been reported missing after 1992 Karabakh war. He was later given the status of a martyr in Azerbaijan.
