Rustamov: Energy sector faces over 1,000 serious cyberattacks weekly worldwide

The energy sector is the most widely targeted among critical infrastructure industries when it comes to cyberattacks, Head of the National Cybersecurity Center of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan, Davud Rustamov, stated during panel discussions at the 4th National Cybersecurity Forum in Baku, Report informs.

The official explained that the main reason is the domino effect caused by energy disruptions: "When energy is unavailable, the functioning of other sectors is also disrupted. Reports show that the energy sector tops the list of 10 critical infrastructure areas (classified as 12 in some countries, 8 in others) and is considered the most prioritized sector. Based on various sources, more than 1,000 serious cyberattacks are recorded weekly against this sector globally. The trend is rapidly increasing worldwide."

Rustamov also highlighted the existence of APT (Advanced Persistent Threats) – state-sponsored attacks:

"We all understand the difference between state-backed attacks and ordinary ones. When state support is involved, the participation of intelligence services is evident, making this threat extremely serious. Such attacks cannot be considered routine activity. They specifically target critical information infrastructure, aiming for persistence and long-term presence. Experience shows that these attacks often remain undetected for 200–300 days and are designed to ensure lasting infiltration."
