Mitsubishi to halt making world's first electric car

Japan's Mitsubishi Motors intends to complete production of the world's first electric car, the i-MiEV, by the end of the current fiscal year (March 2021), Report says, citing NHK.

The main reason for this decision is the low level of sales of the model, as well as the general crisis in the company and the desire to reduce costs. Besides, Mitsubishi Motors may develop a new electric vehicle with the support of its partner, Nissan.

The i-MiEV was launched in 2009 and was the first electric car to be available to buyers. The vehicle is equipped with a 63-horsepower electric motor, and the battery has a range of about 160 kilometers.

The car is also available under the Peugeot and Citroen brands.

About 50,000 of these cars have been sold worldwide.
