Azerbaijan represented at WSIS Forum 2020 meeting

The Ministerial Meeting was held in a virtual format within the World Summit framework on the Information Society (WSIS-2020) organized by the International Telecommunication Union, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and High Technologies told Report.

The main topic of discussion was the elimination of the digital divide - the mechanisms of global cooperation to accelerate the digital transition.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade represented Azerbaijan.

Welcoming the virtual roundtable participants, Elmir Velizadeh said that the coronavirus pandemic increased the importance of communication and highlighted the significance of eliminating the digital divide.

The Deputy Minister noted that the development of high technologies in Azerbaijan, including the ICT sector, is a priority state policy.

"Our country's projects take into account domestic needs and, at the same time, provide local access. For example, Azerbaijan, which successfully implements the satellite program, first of all, provides satellite services for a wide range of countries, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, in addition to meeting national needs," Valizade emphasized.

At the end of his speech, the ministry official stated that projects such as EPEG (Europe-Persia Express Gateway) fiber-optic line and TASIM - Trans-Eurasian Super Information Highway reduce the digital divide in the region.
