The prevalence of HIV infection in Azerbaijan is quite lower than in other countries in the region, said Gunash Jafarova, deputy director of the Republican AIDS Center of the Ministry of Health, Report informs.
She said that as a result of the targeted activities of the Ministry of Health among the risk groups, it was possible to keep the spread of HIV infection at a concentrated stage: "In general, the first case of HIV infection was detected in our country in 1987. Over the past 36 years, 9,167 Azerbaijani citizens have been officially registered at the Republican AIDS Center, 6,357 (69.3%) of whom are men, and 2,810 (30.7%) are women."
