IAEA official: Pandemic set health sector back decades

The COVID-19 pandemic has set the health sector back decades in some areas, such as cancer research, said Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the panel meeting within the framework of the 10th Global Baku Forum, Report informs.

"According to our research, many countries, including African countries, do not have adequate access to radiation therapy," she stressed.

Mokhtar noted that the necessary equipment is expensive and those countries cannot afford it: "We started from Africa. But we are not a humanitarian organization, we need help in this matter."

She also spoke about oint program by IAEA and FAO for cooperation with veterinary services, reminding that the coronavirus has started to pass from animals to humans: “We are not looking for a magic solution to prevent the pandemic, but we are making efforts in this direction.”
