European Commissioner says Bulgarian strain of COVID may emerge

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton has announced the possibility of a ‘Bulgarian’ variant of the coronavirus due to low rates of vaccination in Bulgaria, calling the situation a tragedy, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

Since a lot of people are not vaccinated, a new variant may form and become much more stable, said Breton, who is visiting Bulgaria.

He noted that in Europe 76% of the population are vaccinated, and in Bulgaria only 26% of the population got their jabs, and against this background the fifth wave is approaching.

Over the past day, 2,785 cases of COVID have been detected in Bulgaria. In general, almost 27,000 people have died, including 145 over the past day, and 91% of them have not been vaccinated.
