Coffee can burn fat, doctor says

Russian physician-therapist, endocrinologist, cardiologist Tatyana Romanenko, in an interview with aif.ru, has revealed that coffee can fight excess weight and burn it, Report informs.

The caffeine contained in coffee seeds inhibits the PDE (phosphodiesterase) enzyme, which leads to the accumulation of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) inside the cells, which increases the breakdown of glycogen, which is also called an easily used energy source. This is provided that coffee beans contain 1-2 percent caffeine, and tea contains more than 2 percent of caffeine.

‘Stocks (reserves) of glycogen are used by the body in different ways. It all depends on the functional characteristics of the cell. Liver glycogen is broken down when the concentration of glucose in the blood decreases, especially when it comes to breaks between meals,’ the doctor said.

She noted that after 12-18 hours of fasting, liver glycogen stores are completely depleted.

The doctor reminded that people who have contraindications to drinking coffee should refrain from such methods of ‘losing weight.’ In particular, people with gastrointestinal diseases, those who suffer from cardiovascular pathologies, etc. should be careful with coffee.
