The Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra have each recorded more than 2,000 cases of infection with mucormycosis (black fungus) - a dangerous fungal disease that can lead to death, Report informs, citing Indian media.
According to official data, 2,281 patients with mucormycosis were registered in Gujarat, while Maharashtra identified exactly 2,000 cases.
The Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers of India, Sadananda Gowda, has tweeted that the total number of people infected with mucormycosis in the country is estimated at 8,848. The states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Karnataka are most severely affected.
