The UN is experiencing political chaos and disagreements, Wu Hongbo, former special representative of the Chinese government for European affairs, said at a panel session at the XII Global Baku Forum, Report informs.
Hongbo, who served as UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs from 2012 to 2017, emphasized that in this political chaos, China's position is to preserve the organization and improve its operational mechanisms.
"We are not going to reinvent the wheel, we aim to preserve the UN and improve the organization's working mechanisms," he said.
Hongbo emphasized that there are several strong political actors in the world, such as the Global South countries and BRICS.
"The Global South, as we see, collectively concentrates more than 40% of the world's economic power. It accounts for 80% of annual economic growth. Another group is BRICS, which accounts for almost half of the planet's population," he said.
In his opinion, the Global North and Western countries should listen to these political forces.
He emphasized that China aims to cooperate with political actors such as the US and EU, despite the actions of the Trump administration, which imposed tariff restrictions on China.
Hongbo noted that there is a factor of double standards in the UN regarding developing countries and the Global South, therefore he proposed changing this paradigm to improve the quality of international cooperation.
"First of all, we must focus on correcting the historical injustice in the UN towards developing countries, particularly African ones," he added.
