WHO chief: COP29 achieved success despite difficult negotiations

Thanks to the joint efforts of the participating countries at the COP29 climate conference, significant progress was achieved despite difficult negotiations, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said at the opening of the 12th Global Baku Forum, Report informs.

"It is a great honor for me to be in Baku again. Thank you for the invitation. I was here during COP29, and we all know that the negotiations were not easy. However, the willingness of countries to engage in dialogue and find solutions made it possible to achieve success. Yes, it was not easy, but quite possible," Ghebreyesus noted.

Multilateral dialogue plays a key role in addressing global challenges, emphasized the WHO chief, also noting that climate change directly affects the emergence and spread of diseases that the organization is actively fighting against. Commenting on the US plans to withdraw from WHO, Ghebreyesus called it a "wrong decision" that could negatively impact international health efforts.

The 12th Global Baku Forum is being held on March 13-15. The forum on the topic "Rethinking World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities" is organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center. The event is attended by current and former heads of state and government, ministers, parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations from around the world, heads of UN structures, Nobel Prize laureates, scientists and experts.
