US Congressman Steve Cohen issues statement on Khojaly massacre

Co-chairman of the working group on Azerbaijan in the US Congress, representative of the State of Tennessee in the House of Representatives, Democrat Steve Cohen, made a statement on the 29th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy.

The Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States told Report that, according to the statement, the killing of hundreds of residents of Khojaly during the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict was the largest massacre targeting ethnic Azerbaijanis.

The Khojaly city in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan had 7,000 inhabitants before the massacre perpetrated by Armenian troops, and more than 600 unarmed people, including 106 women and 83 children, were killed, less than 2,000 people survived. More than 100 children lost one parent, 25 children lost both parents, eight families were completely destroyed.

The Congress member also said that the conflict was not resolved despite the ceasefire in 1994. Still, Cohen expressed hope that Armenia and Azerbaijan could achieve peace after the war of 2020. Moreover, it was emphasized that long-term stability, security, and regional cooperation serve the South Caucasus region and the whole world.

In conclusion, Steve Cohen again commemorated the people who lost their lives in this tragedy and expressed his condolences to the Azerbaijanis.
