The UN seeks to expand cooperation with Azerbaijan, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the UN World Food Program (WFP) Carl Skau told journalists, Report informs.
He stressed that global food security remains a priority for the WFP: "The problem is getting worse: about 350 million people suffer from acute food insecurity. The reasons are armed conflicts, climate change, extreme weather conditions and economic shocks. Vulnerable groups of the population are particularly affected."
According to Skau, today it is important to draw attention to this problem and make it a priority on the international agenda: "Problems in Gaza, Sudan, Syria and other regions are among the topics we are focusing on."
Touching upon the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan, he noted that cooperation is already underway, but it needs to be expanded and deepened: "We are facing a serious financial deficit. Traditional donors, mainly Western countries, have reduced funding despite growing needs. We are looking for new partners. Last year we participated in the climate conference in Baku, held productive meetings with the government and hope to develop this partnership."
Skau also spoke about possible formats for Azerbaijan's participation in solving food security problems in the world: "Azerbaijan can contribute to solving such problems through logistical support, participation in diplomatic initiatives and financial assistance. In the current circumstances, we count on support from all countries, including Azerbaijan."
