During the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79), a high-level meeting of the COP Troika presidencies was held, bringing together ministers and high-level representatives from various countries, as well as officials from international organizations, Report informs.
Speaking at the event, Mukhtar Babayev, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan and COP29 President-Designate, emphasized the importance of joint efforts of COP Troika presidencies in combating global climate change.
He highlighted Azerbaijan's collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (COP28) and Brazil (COP30), the Troika countries of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Minister Babayev stressed that the COP29 Baku Summit will be a critical moment for the world. "Scientific results show that the world is not currently progressing fast enough to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. We need to increase the ambition of our nationally determined contributions to realize the 1.5°C target," he stated.
The minister underlined the necessity of reaching a broad consensus at COP29 to agree on new financial goals and increase support for developing countries in their fight against climate change. "We need sincere cooperation among all countries on this topic in the coming days and months," he added.
The Baku-Belem Climate Partnership Memorandum, adopted between Azerbaijan and Brazil, was highlighted as an essential framework for strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of sustainable development and combating climate change.
Extensive discussions were held on the targets for the next nationally determined contributions.
