UN General Assembly chief meets with members of NAM Youth Network in Baku

The Chairman of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, met with members of the youth network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Report informs that the Rector of the ADA University Hafiz Pashayev and Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov also attended the meeting at the university.

Opening the meeting, the deputy minister noted the critical role of youth in the development of society. "It is very important that we have gathered at the ADA University, where students from many countries of the world receive education," said Mammadov.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected the world, and now it is necessary to think about post-pandemic issues, in which youth initiatives play a significant role.

"Azerbaijan, as the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, greatly appreciates the contribution and attention of UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid to youth and its development. Last year we founded the NAM youth network, which allows youth to contribute to the organization's activities and pay attention to the Sustainable Development Goals. It is planned to hold a summit of the NAM Youth Network in Baku in July," the deputy minister said.

President of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid noted that young people bear a special responsibility in addressing the pressing challenges of our time. "Young people are needed for change, for a better future. I believe that the voices of young people will always be heard. I also established the Fellowship for Hope program for young diplomats and activists; this is very important in our world. We are always open to cooperation with young people, are ready to listen to their proposals and support them," he said.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, also answered questions from the participants of the NAM Youth Network about the structure of the UN Assembly and its activities.
