Secretary-general: Council of Europe cooperates with Azerbaijan in protecting women’s rights

The Council of Europe is cooperating with Azerbaijan in protecting women's rights and combating domestic violence, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejcinovic Buric said during an online speech at an event dedicated to the role of parliaments in the fight against violence against women and domestic violence, Report informs.

Violence against women should always be at the center of the CE discussions. Every state, every organization must fight violence on a permanent basis. Azerbaijan is taking positive steps in this direction, she added.

She noted that Azerbaijan is implementing various projects to protect women’s rights and help victims of domestic violence.

Pejcinovic Buric stressed the importance of adopting the Istanbul Convention. She noted that countries that have ratified this convention have made great strides forward in fighting violence against women.

The EC hopes that Azerbaijan will also ratify the Istanbul Convention, she added.
