Russian Foreign Ministry: 'EU is trying to intervene in normalization of Baku-Yerevan relations'

Russia observes the European Union's attempts to intervene in the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, answering a question from news.ru at a weekly briefing, Report informs.

"We see this as another attempt to intervene in any way in the settlement of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, to press the mediation efforts of our side," Zakharova said.

She noted that this is the decision of a sovereign state on how to build its relations.

"We proceed from the fact that the only key to the reconciliation of Baku and Yerevan, the establishment of lasting peace and long-term stability in the region, is the full implementation of the tripartite statements of the leaders. We maintain regular contacts on this issue with our Armenian and Azerbaijani colleagues," Maria Zakharova said.

On October 6, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with French President Emmanuel Macron, President of the European Council Charles Michel and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Prague.

Following the meeting, Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed their commitment to the Charter of the United Nations and the 1991 Almaty Declaration, according to which both sides recognize each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Armenia also agreed to contribute to the EU civil mission along the border with Azerbaijan.
