Ravan Hasanov: Islamophobia becoming increasingly widespread form of discrimination

Islamophobia is becoming an increasingly common form of discrimination in many Western societies, executive director of the Baku International Center for Multiculturalism Ravan Hasanov said at an international scientific conference on the topic "Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas," Report informs.

He noted that Islamophobia manifests itself in incitement to hatred, exclusionary policies, and even acts of violence.

"We have gathered at the conference not just to mark the date [March 15 - International Day to Combat Islamophobia], but also to reaffirm a universal commitment: to defend the dignity and rights of all people, regardless of their religion. Islamophobia, like all forms of fanaticism, is not just a social evil, it is a serious moral failure, a distortion of the truth and a betrayal of our common human values. Unfortunately, in many Western societies, this form of discrimination is becoming increasingly widespread, which is reflected in hate speech, exclusionary policies, and even acts of violence," he noted.

Hasanov emphasized that the situation in France, where Muslim communities are often stigmatized in public speeches under the slogan of secularism, is of particular concern.

"Similarly, in India, the rise of religious nationalism has led to deepening marginalization and hostility towards Muslims. These are not isolated events - they are part of an alarming global trend that requires a unified and urgent response based on justice, compassion, and the fundamental rights of every human being," he added.

The executive director also called for taking advantage of the international conference in Baku to establish constructive cooperation that promotes integration and mutual understanding among representatives of all faiths.
