PACE Committee condemns Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital

Strasbourg. 25 January. REPORT.AZ/ “Israeli-Palestinian peace process: The role of Council of Europe” resolution has been adopted as part of the winter session of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

The Western Bureau of Report News Agency informs the document was adopted based on report of PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy. The resolution condemns US President Donald Trump’s statement issued on December 6, 2017 about recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital and taking measures to relocate US embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem.

Stressing the UN Security Council’s resolutions, PACE calls both sides to obey to norms of international law, to avoid making unilateral decision posing threat to peace and regrets to cease the peacemaking measures.

The document says the PACE members recognize Palestine’s rights to be an independent state and demands from Israel to stop establishing new colonies, expanding the current colonies, destroying the residential settlements, forcing the population to leave their homes, liberate the occupied territories of Jerusalem.

The resolution was adopted by a vote of 79 in favor, 24 against, with 16 abstentions.
