Opening of Armenia-Iran railway through Nakhchivan under discussion

The Tripartite Working Group on Restoration of Economic and Transport Relations is discussing the gradual opening of the Arazdayan-Horadiz railway, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said, Report informs via Sputnik Armenia.

According to Grigoryan, one of the options discussed was the opening of existing links from Nakhchivan to Iran without waiting for the construction of a new railway line in the Mehri and Minjivan-Horadiz sections.

“The possibility of opening any communication line, which can be realized using the existing infrastructure, is, of course, desirable for us. But this is the subject of negotiations, and I still can not say what agreement we will reach,” he said.

Mher Grigoryan said that another option was to open the Ijevan-Gazakh railway line.

The deputy prime minister noted that more realistic projects are planned at this stage, which will provide the necessary ratio of costs and benefits.

“Although no options have been removed from the agenda, the issues related to the current stage of negotiations are being discussed now,” he added.

He stressed that the restoration of the railway link with Turkey is being discussed at a conceptual level without any details.
