Naryshkin: Russia supports Azerbaijan's acquisition of SCO observer status

Moscow welcomes and supports Azerbaijan's acquisition of observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and closer interaction of the country with the BRICS states, the Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation, Sergey Naryshkin, said in Baku, Report informs via Russian media.

"Russia welcomes and supports Azerbaijan's acquisition of observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and closer interaction of the country with the BRICS states. These organizations are already authoritative and respected in the world... In my opinion, closer interaction with international organizations will certainly benefit Azerbaijan itself, including economic and political dividends. Our countries, Russia and Azerbaijan, will have an additional platform for interaction in a multilateral format and, of course, we will pursue the common statutory goals of the above-mentioned organizations," said Naryshkin.

Recall that in August of this year, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Aykhan Hajizade, stated that Azerbaijan had applied for membership in BRICS.

In July 2024, Azerbaijan applied to change its status in the SCO - from a dialogue partner to an observer country.
