France does not follow and respect its obligations. This country is trying to change the constitution so that it can influence next year's elections, and thousands of people in New Caledonia will vote in favor of France, the Chair оf the New Caledonian Congress Committee оn Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Sustainable Development, Energy, Transport and Communications, Naisseline Omayra, said at the press conference in Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Report informs.
"France should have supported the self-determination and independence of the people of New Caledonia, but today, France is trying to reduce the influence of minorities by changing its constitution. Their intervention in the election legislation is not for the benefit of our people, it can have a negative impact on stability and democracy," she stressed.
Naisseline Omayra noted that the third review of the referendum was not conducted properly: "Independent movements, such as ours, started protests against the referendum. We appealed to the International Court of Justice regarding this referendum. Because the third review of that referendum was not conducted correctly, although it was important for our people. France is trying to make 30,000 non-Kanak people participate in voting by changing the legislation. In our opinion, France should respect its international obligations and be neutral. We continue our struggle for this. We thank the government of Azerbaijan, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) for their support for the Kanak people."
