Magic of Christmas: How Catholics worldwide embrace the holiday spirit

Today, Catholics around the world are celebrating Christmas, one of the most significant and solemn ceremonies in the Christian world. This joyous holiday commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ in the city of Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago.

Report informs that depending on the denomination, Christians celebrate Christmas on different days (December 25 and January 6-7). Currently, Christmas is considered an official public holiday in more than 100 countries worldwide. Even in countries like India and Malaysia, where Christians are a minority, December 25 is still recognized as a national holiday.

In most countries that celebrate Christmas, many stores close their doors for the day. In England, public transportation also comes to a halt on December 25, allowing families to spend quality time together.

One of the most iconic figures associated with Christmas is Santa Claus, also known as Father Frost. The inspiration for this beloved character comes from Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop renowned for his miracles and generosity.

Preparations for Christmas begin months in advance, with people eagerly decorating their homes and public spaces. The tradition of adorning Christmas trees is believed to have originated in Germany during the 16th century before spreading throughout Europe.

Christmas feasts often feature turkey and vegetables, but the specific dishes vary depending on regional customs. In Sicily, for example, the holiday table is graced with 12 different types of fish. In the United Kingdom and countries influenced by its traditions, turkey, goose, broth, potatoes, and vegetables are staples. Special desserts, such as Christmas pudding, sweet biscuits, and fruit pies, add a touch of sweetness to the festivities.

In Azerbaijan, the Catholic Church actively participates in Christmas celebrations, providing a welcoming environment for Catholics to attend services and offer prayers. Each year, President Ilham Aliyev extends his heartfelt greetings to the Catholic community on the occasion of Christmas.
