Lithuanian Cabinet presents candidate for post of envoy to Azerbaijan

The Lithuanian government has proposed to the president to appoint Kęstutis Vaškelevičius as the new ambassador to Azerbaijan, Report informs referring to Sputnik-Lithuania.

Vaškelevičius currently works in the Government Chancellery as the head of the International Relations and European Union group, having previously held various diplomatic positions in other Lithuanian embassies.

The diplomat said at the meeting that as ambassador he would strive for closer relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan.

“As much Europe as possible, both in Azerbaijan and in the entire South Caucasus region,” he said.

He added that the goal will also be to promote the development of bilateral relations, economic, cultural and academic cooperation.

Vaškelevičius named the COP29 climate change conference, which will be held in Baku this November, as his specific work.

If the president of Lithuania approves his candidacy, the diplomat will begin his new position in August.
