Israeli parliament to vote for new president

Elections for the country's 11th president will take place in the Israeli Knesset (parliament) today.

Report informs citing TASS that two candidates are running for the presidency in the upcoming elections. These are the head of the Jewish Agency for Israel "Sokhnut" Isaac Herzog and Miriam Peretz, the second female presidential candidate in the country's history to be awarded the prestigious Israel Prize in 2018.

The term of office of the incumbent President Reuven Rivlin expires on July 9. Under the law, his successor must be elected no later than 30 days before that date.

Israel has a seven-year term for presidential powers. It does not allow one person to hold the position of the head of state twice.
