Hikmat Hajiyev: 'It was the initiative of Azerbaijan to sign peace treaty with Armenia despite suffering from 30-year-long military occupation'

After the 44-day war, it was the initiative of Azerbaijan to sign a peace treaty with Armenia despite the fact that Azerbaijan was suffering from the 30-year-long military occupation and aggression from the Armenian side, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev said while answering the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan, Alim Bayel, at the briefing, Report informs.

According to him, the text of the bilateral peace treaty between the two countries has also been prepared by Azerbaijan and submitted to the Armenian side: “Our international partners, particularly the United States, provided good platforms for facilitation of the peace treaty discussions. But, it’s not important where we are discussing, but it was important what we are discussing. More than 70 percent of the peace treaty has been cleared. Unfortunately, as a result of negative tendencies, we could not hold yet another round of intensive discussions in Washington. But it’s still on the agenda of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan continues to strongly support peace treaty, and we do believe that it can be done. But Armenia should demonstrate positive engagement with regard to that.”
