Hikmat Hajiyev: Baku and Yerevan should talk to each other to find solution

A real solution [to normalization of relations] is in two countries - Armenia and Azerbaijan, Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said in an interview with Arab News.

"The UN Security Council adopted four resolutions in 1993 with regard to the context of military occupation and demanded immediate, unconditional and full withdrawal of Armenian troops. I do regret that this resolution remained on the table," he said.

Hikmat Hajiyev noted that the Security Council members, including those who were actually the Minsk Group co-chairs, didn't do enough to ensure fulfillment of the demands of the UN Security Council resolutions.

"But now I do regret that after 30 years, the UN Security Council starts to the discuss the issues in our region," Hajiyev said.

"But what was the outcome of the August 16 Security Council resolutions? I think they went beyond certain elements and everybody came to this conclusion and everybody's message was that the real solution lies on the ground, not in Washington, not in Brussels, not somewhere else," he said.

"A real solution is in two countries, Armenia and Azerbaijan. We should talk to one another to find a solution," Hajiyev said.

The Karabakh Armenians live inside Azerbaijan, the diplomat noted.

"There is no other way. And we should have direct contact and have a solution on outstanding issues on the ground," Hajiyev noted, adding that other countries won't solve this problem.
