Former Mexican envoy: Colonial policies suppress cultural heritage of different peoples

Colonial policies not only negatively affect people’s rights, but also lead to the suppression of the cultural heritage of various peoples, former Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan, professor at ADA University Juan Rodrigo Labardini said at the international conference on “Decolonization Dialogues: Legacy, Challenges, and Progress” taking place in Baku, Report informs.

He noted that the colonialists deprived the country of resources, and as an example of the impact of colonial policies on culture, he recalled the region of Latin America.

“In Latin America, colonizers developed a concept designed to control not only the region, but also to bring significant changes to the local culture, customs and traditions. We do not speak indigenous languages in Mexico, but use Spanish. This also affects our understanding of life,” emphasized Rodrigo Labardini.
