FM: Hungarian energy companies acquired shares in Azerbaijani oil and gas fields

Hungarian energy companies have acquired ownership rights to Azerbaijani oil and gas fields, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told a joint press conference with the Secretary General of the Turkic States Organization, Kubanychbek Omuraliev.

Report quotes Omuraliev as saying those companies will be able to participate in international markets not only as buyers, but also as sellers: "Of course, this takes us to a completely different level."

The minister said that Hungary sees unrealistic attempts to portray energy supply as a political issue:

"This is an absurd approach. Energy supply is a physical issue, and today the situation is such that Hungary's natural gas supply must be carried out almost entirely through Türkiye. Had it not been for the TurkStream gas pipeline, Hungary's natural gas supply today would not be physically possible, because Ukraine has closed the pipeline that carries gas from the East to Central Europe."

Szijjarto said that Kazakhstan recently began producing natural gas for the first time in the country's history:

"Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have decided to build nuclear power plants and plan to use Hungarian nuclear industry technologies in these projects. The region represented by the Turkic States Organization has become the third most important source of oil and natural gas in the world. Therefore, it is of great importance for Hungary to have good cooperation with these countries in the energy sector."
