Expert: Political tensions between EU and rest of world reflect weakness of Borrell’s diplomacy

Certain anti-Azerbaijani tendencies in the EU policy are the result of the activities of the current leadership, including the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell. However, this weakness of Borrell’s diplomacy affects relations with the rest of the world, US political scientist and expert in the field of international relations Peter Tase told Report.

The expert noted that Borrell is well known for his double standards applied in EU’s Foreign Affairs and Security Policy administration.

“It is because of Borrell’s weak leadership that EU has miserably failed and stalled its trade negotiations with MERCOSUR trade bloc in South America,” he added, noting that the EU is unwilling or unable to understand that the Azerbaijani government adopted multiculturalism as a state policy.

“Minority rights and their economic integration in Azerbaijan are the main pillar of public policies, meanwhile in Europe, the Roma and Hungarian minority groups are still marginalized and discriminated.”

The political scientist emphasized that unilateral statements by EU leadership not only impede the achievement of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but also threaten the stability and prosperity of the South Caucasus region.
