Expert: Agreement with Iran - important step towards creating alternative communications

The opening of the Zangazur corridor is a principal issue for Azerbaijan, an issue of historical justice and geopolitical expediency in the first place, political expert Ilgar Valizade said.

Report informs that the expert was commenting on the signing of a memo on mutual understanding between Azerbaijan and Iran on creating new communications between the Eastern Zangazur Economic District and Nakhchivan via Iran.

He noted that the agreements signed with Iran could be viewed as an essential step towards creating alternative communications but not an alternative to the Zangazur corridor.

"The Zangazur Corridor is not about transport; it's about history. The agreements signed with Iran are some kind of conditions that help bypass purely technical problems," he said.

"If Armenians are in no hurry to open communications from their side, we will open them from the Iranian side. But the roads passing through Iranian territory and the roads passing through settlements previously inhabited by the Azerbaijani population and expelled from there more than 30 years ago are not the same things. The Armenian side can change routes as much as it likes, 'play' with schemes and estimates, but this will not turn it away from the inevitable. Nothing and no one can resist this Zangazur corridor," he said.
