Elchin Amirbayov: Zangazur Corridor can bring Armenia out of isolation

As provided for in the 2020 ceasefire agreement, a joint road and railway can be built through the Zangazur area, the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Special Assignments Elchin Amirbayov said in an interview with the German newspaper ZEIT.

"Armenia could overcome its isolation. It could collect transit fees and improve its relationship with Türkiye," Amirbayov said.

As for the possibility of Armenia rejecting this offer, Amirbayov said in this case Azerbaijan could also build the road and railway further south through Iran, which would only be ten kilometers longer.

He finds Armenians' major concern absurd.

Amirbayov also pointed out that the Armenian strip of land is only 34 kilometers wide and separates Azerbaijan from its exclave, Nakhchivan.

"But for that, war? "Absolutely not!" he said.

He noted that Azerbaijan agreed to exchange 32 detained Armenian security personnel for two Azerbaijanis and that was the result of confidence-building measures.
