The policy pursued by the Netherlands threatens the religious and cultural values of Bonaire, undermines fundamental human rights and increases colonial pressure, Secretary of Pueblo Progresivo Uni (Bonaire) Robert Strickx at the international conference "Colonialism: Erasing National and Religious Identity," Report informs.
"About 80 percent of the population of Bonaire professes Christianity, and the local culture is based on these values. However, the laws introduced by the Dutch authorities run counter to the traditional values of the island," Strickx noted.
He emphasized that despite colonial pressure, the people of Bonaire will continue to defend their culture, religious beliefs, and the right to self-determination.
"We will continue to fight for our right to live the way we want and to achieve this by all available means," the representative of Bonaire said.
