MFA: Azerbaijan has repeatedly proven validity of its position on need for changes to Armenian constitution

Azerbaijan has repeatedly proven the validity of its position regarding the need to make changes to the Constitution of Armenia – both during bilateral negotiations and through international institutions, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said answering journalists' questions at a year-end briefing.

According to Report, the minister noted that Azerbaijan's position is based on modern realities.

"How Armenia will carry out these changes is its internal matter. For us, the key issue remains the reference in the Constitution to the act of independence, and this topic continues to have importance for us. The sooner the changes are made, the sooner it will have a positive impact," he emphasized.

US representatives are currently conducting negotiations on TRIPP project in Armenia, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said while answering journalists" questions at a year-end briefing.

According to Report, the minister noted that the TRIPP project is reflected in the Washington agreements:

"In this context, cooperation between the US and Armenia has already been established. This project is important for the US and President Trump even gave the project his name. Currently, US representatives are in Armenia conducting negotiations. The format is bilateral; however, we have already communicated Azerbaijan"s expectations and legitimate interests to them. We believe they will be taken into account."

Bayramov emphasized the particular significance of the project:

"The creation of a connection between Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was already foreseen in the 2020 agreement, but over the years, Armenia has not taken any steps. Azerbaijan immediately began work on its territory, and it is now nearly complete. Armenia has not carried out any work on its side. I cannot assess the reasons-they may be internal or external-but the fact remains: nothing has been accomplished over these years."

Amending Armenia's constitution and fully implementing obligations under the TRIPP project are essential for signing the initialed peace agreement, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said while presenting the outcomes of 2025, Report informs.

He noted that direct contacts have taken place between the sides: "Meetings between civil society representatives were held in both countries as part of confidence-building efforts. In November, a meeting on border delimitation between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides took place in the city of Gabala. Prior to that, online meetings were held in January and February in this context. In addition, permission was granted for Kazakh grain to be transported to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory. However, for a final peace agreement, the fulfillment of the requirements we have mentioned is essential."

The minister emphasized that normalization of the process between Azerbaijan and Armenia is an important step toward establishing lasting peace in the region this year.

According to him, the Washington summit made a significant contribution to this process.
