Azerbaijani FM updates US official on peace agreement progress with Armenia

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has received the delegation led by Joshua Huck, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Report informs, citing Azerbaijan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.

During the meeting, the parties discussed bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States, as well as the regional situation in the post-conflict period, and the prospects of the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

They highly appreciated Azerbaijan-US cooperation within the framework of preparations for COP29, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan this year.

Despite efforts to create positive dynamics in bilateral relations and define cooperation prospects, it was noted that the biased opinions of some US officials have a negative impact on bilateral relations.

In this context, the remarks made by Isobel Coleman, the deputy administrator of the US International Development Agency, at the Armenian embassy in the US on September 16 were underlined. It was emphasized that such statements are disrespectful to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and aim to distort the facts regarding the anti-terrorist measures that ended the illegal presence of Armenian Armed Forces in Azerbaijan’s sovereign territories.

Furthermore, the American side was informed about the situation in the South Caucasus in the post-conflict period, the process of normalization and peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

It was mentioned that Azerbaijan, as the initiator of the main elements of the peace process with Armenia, is an interested party in establishing peace and stability in the region. Moreover, landmine threats in the region were noted, and possible cooperation in this direction was considered.

Despite the significant progress in the negotiations on the peace agreement, it was emphasized that the most serious obstacle to signing the final peace agreement is the continuation of territorial claims against Azerbaijan in a number of legal and political documents, especially the Constitution of Armenia.

Also, it was stated that the policy of militarization of Armenia does not serve peace and stability in the region.

During the meeting, the sides also exchanged views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
