Azerbaijan, Russia create working group on issue of Caspian Sea shallowing

Azerbaijan and Russia have created a working group consisting of representatives from relevant ministries and agencies, research institutes of the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan, to conduct studies on the problem of shallowing in the Caspian Sea, Report informs via the Russian government.

"In the format of joint work, specialists will develop an action plan, which is planned to include measures such as studying the causes of changes in the Caspian Sea level, short-term and long-term forecasts, adaptation strategies, monitoring of water level fluctuations, joint scientific research, as well as other steps aimed at reducing the negative impact on coastal territories," reads the report.

The co-chairs appointed are Rauf Hajiyev, deputy minister of ecology and natural resources of Azerbaijan, and his Russian counterpart Sergey Anoprienko.

According to the Russian government, on August 19, 2024, a decision was made to create the group following a meeting between President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, during which the parties discussed issues related to the shallowing of the Caspian Sea.

On September 17, 2024, the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Ministers Shahin Mustafayev and Alexey Overchuk, considered problems associated with the shallowing of the Caspian Sea, options for developing future scenarios of level changes and corresponding adaptation measures, and also agreed on the creation of a bilateral working group.
