Azerbaijan-EU new partnership agreement 90 percent ready

The 6th Eastern Partnership Summit of the European Union was held in Brussels, the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium, on December 15, Report informs.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the Summit.

Noting the successful development of Azerbaijan’s relations with the European Union, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of the Partnership Priorities document, initialed between the European Union and Azerbaijan in 2018. Noting that 90 percent of the work on a new partnership agreement between Azerbaijan and the European Union has been completed, President Ilham Aliyev expressed hope that the work on the rest of the document will be completed as a result of negotiations scheduled to be held in the coming period. The head of state said that Azerbaijan signed documents on strategic partnership with nine member states of the European Union, that is, one third of the member states of the structure. He noted that these documents on strategic partnership, signed on a bilateral basis, demonstrate the nature of Azerbaijan-EU ties.

President Ilham Aliyev recalled with satisfaction the visit of President of the European Council Charles Michel in July this year to the South Caucasus region, including Azerbaijan, and the meetings held with him during the visit, and stressed that during them regional issues were discussed in detail.

The head of state thanked the president of the European Council for his constant attention to regional issues, contribution to these processes and their support. In this context, he especially noted that the discussions between the president of Azerbaijan and the prime minister of Armenia, which lasted for about five hours, held on December 14 at the initiative of Charles Michel, were held in a constructive atmosphere. President Ilham Aliyev emphasized Charles Michel’s contribution to the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He also said that these negotiations, held on the initiative of Charles Michel, were very practical and thorough, issues such as the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, delimitation and demarcation of borders, laying of transport infrastructure, in particular, a railway line, were discussed there. Ilham Aliyev noted that in the end they were efficient and pragmatic.
