Russian company begins insurance payouts for AZAL tragedy victims

Russian insurance company AlphaStrakhovanie has begun calculating damages and processing insurance payouts for the families of those killed and for those injured in the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Embraer 190 near Aktau, Kazakhstan.

According to Report, Ilya Kabachnik, Deputy General Director for Aviation and Space Insurance at AlphaStrakhovanie, confirmed the news to Interfax.

The payouts are governed by the Montreal Convention of 1999, which both Azerbaijan and Russia are signatories of. According to the agreement between AlphaStrakhovanie and AZAL, the insurance coverage includes risks for flights to Russia, ensuring payouts in accordance with Russia's Compulsory Insurance Law (OCPGO N67-FZ), as noted by company representatives.

The maximum compensation for loss of life or injury, under Russian law, is capped at 2 million rubles (approximately $22,400). This support is being swiftly provided based on the submission of necessary documentation.

The AZAL passenger plane, en route from Baku to Grozny, tragically crashed on December 25, 2024, near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Out of the 67 people on board, 38 lost their lives, while 29 survived.

Preliminary reports suggest the crash resulted from external physical and technical factors while the plane was flying over Russian airspace near Grozny.
