FIFA president reacts to punching of referee in Türkiye

The President of the International Association Football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino condemned the punching of referee Halil Umut Meler that occurred after the Turkish championship match, Report informs.

Infantino stated that referees, players, fans and team staff must be safe.

“There is no place for violence in football, either on or off the field. The events that occurred after the Turkish championship match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor are completely unacceptable and have no place in our sport or society. Without match officials, there is no football. Referees, players, fans and team staff must be safe to enjoy the game.”

The head of FIFA called on the relevant authorities to “ensure strict compliance with this requirement at all levels.”
