Indonesia discussing use of Mir cards with Russia

Representatives of the banking and financial systems of Indonesia and Russia are discussing the possibility of accepting Mir cards by Indonesian banks, Indonesian Ambassador to Russia Jose Antonio Morato Tavares said, Report informs citing Russian media.

“I recommended to Jakarta that our banks start using the Mir payment system,” the diplomat said, adding that the Russian payment system would be extremely useful for Russian tourists coming to Indonesia.

On September 15, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury (OFAC) warned that non-US banks, entering into agreements with the Russian Mir card operator, risk becoming participants in actions to bypass US sanctions, expanding the territory of use of the Mir system outside of Russia. After that, a number of banks in Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkiye stopped accepting Mir cards.
