In January-March 2025, some 600,073 tons of cargo were exported from Turkmenistan, which is 120% more than in the same period last year, the head of the commercial and accounting department of the Marine Merchant Fleet CJSC (the national fleet of Turkmenistan) Tazegul Toygulyeva said, Report informs.
She noted that 95% of this volume passed through the Baku port and the main share of transportation - about 70% was oil and oil products.
“The Turkmen fleet, being a national sea carrier, effectively carries out transportation through the ports of the Caspian Sea, especially through the Baku port. We have a long-term cooperation program and a bilateral agreement with the Baku port, which operates on a priority basis. The main flow of cargo, including oil and oil products, passes through the ports of Azerbaijan. Also, transit cargo goes through the port of Turkmenbashi and then goes to other regions,” Toygulyeva noted.
She added that in 2024, the total volume of transportation amounted to more than 2 million tons, of which 90% came from the Baku port. Of this volume, 273,000 tons were imports, while exports exceeded 1.77 million tons.
Toygulyeva also stated that as part of the expansion of maritime logistics, the Turkmen fleet plans to develop new routes in the Caspian Sea and enter the Black Sea: “For these purposes, a program for the construction of various types of vessels, including dry cargo ships and universal ferries, is being implemented.”
She noted that two ferries operate on the route Turkmenbashi - the port of Alat and have already proven their effectiveness in transporting transit and export-import cargo.
“Additionally, it is planned to build two RoPax ferries capable of transporting vehicles and railway cars. This will increase the volume of oil and oil product transportation between the two ports. Also, the Balkan Shipyard has begun building dry cargo ships with a lifting capacity of 6,000 tons - it is planned to release two such vessels. This will become an incentive for the development of domestic shipbuilding,” she added.
