TAP AG moves to next stage of research for transporting hydrogen blends via TAP

The pipeline company TAP AG, operator of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), has begun a new phase of studies to assess the gas transportation system's readiness for hydrogen blend deliveries, Report informs referring to the company.

"TAP’s ambition is to develop the asset to allow transportation of hydrogen. We have outlined a roadmap to prepare for the medium/long-term transport of natural gas and hydrogen blends, as well as renewable gases," reads the report.

The company reminded that the preliminary study conducted in 2021 confirmed TAP's ability to transport hydrogen blends in the future.

"We are currently conducting tests on pipeline materials in an international laboratory. Results for first tests were received in Q4 2024 and are currently being assessed. The next tests have already started, with results expected in 2025. Once the material testing is complete, the results will need to be thoroughly assessed.

In addition, the suitability of other equipment (above the ground installations) required for hydrogen transport must also be evaluated, and those results will need to be considered. Only after these assessments are complete can TAP’s readiness for hydrogen transportation be more accurately understood," the company noted.

For conducting these studies, TAP AG engaged the international consulting company Penspen, which specializes in the energy sector.

"This project will evaluate whether TAP’s above-ground installations (block valves and compressor stations) are hydrogen-ready for hydrogen blending with natural gas."

Under the contract, UK-based engineering group Penspen will conduct a comprehensive analysis of TAP AG's ground facilities, shut-off valves, and compressor stations.

The study aims to determine the feasibility of using hydrogen blends in the existing pipeline infrastructure. TAP is a component of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) system.

The total length of the pipeline is 878 km, of which 550 km runs through northern Greece, 215 km through Albania, 105 km crosses the Adriatic Sea bed, and 8 km runs through Italy. The supply of Azerbaijani gas to consumers in Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria via TAP began on December 31, 2020.
