Samir Rzayev: AZAL developing ESG strategy and net-zero emissions plan

Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL) is developing a comprehensive ESG strategy and a plan to achieve net-zero emissions, company’s president, Samir Rzayev, said during the Aviation Energy Forum of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) held in Baku.

Report quotes him as saying the strategy is based on the principles of sustainable infrastructure, smart airports, renewable energy solutions, green financing, and transparent emissions accounting.

"Our approach is a systematic and data-driven process that includes both macro- and meso-level analysis," he noted.

Rzayev emphasized that AZAL has been publishing sustainability reports since 2021.

Currently, an expanded report for 2024 is being prepared, which will include a full assessment of emissions.

"This step will further strengthen our commitment to responsible growth, environmental management, sustainable finance, energy transition, and transparent ESG governance," he added.

He stated that AZAL is also exploring the prospects of using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a key tool for decarbonization.

"Although global SAF markets are still in the formative stage, we are already aligning our plans with the RefuelEU initiative and conducting feasibility studies to assess the potential for SAF production and supply in the region. Our goal is to ensure that the infrastructure and regulatory framework are ready for the safe, scalable, and certified integration of SAF once it becomes available," he explained.

Rzayev reported that AZAL is cooperating with international financial institutions and development partners to fund its environmental transformation.

"We are exploring green financing opportunities, including the issuance of sustainability bonds and public-private investment mechanisms. These funds will be directed towards clean energy projects and long-term climate-oriented investments," Rzayev said.

According to him, AZAL prioritizes the reduction of carbon emissions through the electrification of ground operations, transitioning to renewable energy sources at airports, and implementing digital solutions to improve energy efficiency. He also stressed the importance of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection.
