A new mechanism is being developed to help developing countries achieve their electrification goals, Fatma Varank, Director of COP31 and Türkiye's Deputy Minister of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change, said at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Report informs.
She explained that the mechanism, called Bridge, will facilitate access to financial resources for developing nations: "Its first applications will be launched in New York as a pilot project with the participation of six countries. The main focus will likely be electrification. Alongside this, we aim to introduce mechanisms that support developing countries, ensuring that no state is left behind. It is well known that some developing nations, particularly small island states and African countries, need both financial and technical support to reach these targets."
Varank added that the COP Presidency will bring this initiative into the COP31 framework with an accompanying support package.
She noted that electrification can cover many areas, but the priority sectors are industry, transport, energy efficiency in buildings, and building electrification: "These are the key directions chosen to help us reach our target."
