Mirziyoyev: Agreement signed with Baku within COP29 facilitates export of green energy to Europe

The Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan during the COP29 Baku Conference will facilitate the export of green energy to Europe, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said at the Sustainable Development Week in Abu Dhabi, Report informs.

The Uzbek leader noted that the country has taken initial steps to revive the Great Silk Road through energy interconnectivity.

"The recently signed multilateral agreement with our partners from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan within the framework of COP29 will enable the export of 'green' energy to Europe. We are interested in jointly realizing Central Asia's enormous potential in solar, water, and wind energy, as well as green hydrogen production," Mirziyoyev stated.

According to him, Uzbekistan has put forward several initiatives at COP28 and COP29 summits in Dubai and Baku, as well as at international forums, to combat the negative effects of global climate change.

"Specifically, this includes creating an International Center for Assessment of Climate Change-Related Damage and Losses, ensuring river ecosystem security, establishing a Regional Hub for implementing water-saving technologies, and forming a plant genetic resource bank," he added.

According to Mirziyoyev, diversifying energy sources and drastically reducing the share of hydrocarbons among them are the main conditions for mitigating climate change impacts, ensuring sustainable development, and global security.

"New Uzbekistan's strategic goal is to ensure environmental sustainability and economic growth through transitioning to a resource-efficient, 'green' development model. That's why 2025 has been declared the Year of Environmental Protection and 'Green' Economy in Uzbekistan," the politician said.

Mirziyoyev emphasized that over the past 5 years, almost $20 billion in foreign investment has been invested in Uzbekistan's energy sector.

"Currently, we are implementing over 50 major projects worth more than $26 billion with foreign partners to produce a total of 24 gigawatts of electricity. We intend to further strengthen regional cooperation in this area and transform Central Asia into one of the centers for developing 'green' economy and 'clean energy,'" he stated.
