Minister: Pakistan supports transition to sustainable energy, ready to cooperate

Pakistan is developing a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving energy efficiency and energy conservation, Federal Minister for Energy (Petroleum Division) of Pakistan Ali Pervaiz Malik said on the sidelines of the 30th Anniversary Baku Energy Forum.

Report quotes him as saying Pakistan, as a brotherly country of Azerbaijan, supports efforts to promote energy efficiency and expresses its readiness to cooperate with the forum in all aspects aimed at abandoning dependence on fossil fuels and moving towards a more balanced energy mix.

“Pakistan is striving for an inclusive and sustainable model of economic growth. I would especially like to emphasize the aspect of sustainability, since we realize that as the country industrializes, the demand for energy will increase. This growth should be accompanied by the active introduction of renewable energy sources and new technologies,” the minister said.

Malik reminded that Pakistan has a population of over 250 million people, but its per capita energy consumption remains low, with an average annual demand of about 14,000 megawatts.

“We also strive for a coordinated energy policy. I am confident that the issues of electricity, oil, gas, and liquid fuels should be considered in a comprehensive manner. The energy system cannot afford fragmentation that leads to inefficient arbitrages,” he added.

The minister emphasized that to ensure better coordination between the electricity and oil sectors, Pakistan will intensify the work of existing platforms, in particular, the Energy Committee, which is personally chaired by the prime minister of the country.

“This is one of the key steps that we intend to implement as part of the ongoing reform,” Malik added.
